I went through and averaged the scores from the lifestyle assessment given during class last week. Keeping in mind that it was self reported and therefore likely a little skewed in your favor, as a class average, your score was an 8 out of 10 which I am thrilled with. The individual section averages were:
By reviewing these averages, we can now set goals (think SMART) for the semester. With Nutrition being the lowest average score, I encourage each of you to write down your eating habits so you can evaluate -- you will likely find ways you can improve your dietary habits, allowing you to make small shifts towards healthier behaviors.
Goal 1
By the end of the Fall 2014 semester, students in Contemporary Health I will have increased their average Nutrition score by 1.5 points.
Goal 2
By the end of the Fall 2014 semester, students in Contemporary Health I will have increased their average Disease Prevention score by 1 point.

- Objective 1: Increase the amount of fruit and vegetable consumption to 7 or more servings per day on most days of the week
- Objective 2: Avoid skipping meals, eating every 3-4 hours most days of the week
- Objective 3: Reduce salt consumption by avoiding many processed foods. Taste all meals, adding herbs when necessary instead of salt
Goal 2
By the end of the Fall 2014 semester, students in Contemporary Health I will have increased their average Disease Prevention score by 1 point.
- Objective 1: Apply sunscreen regularly when out in the sun for more than 20 minutes
- Objective 2: Perform monthly breast/testicle self exams
- Objective 3: See your physician for your annual physical/wellness check-up
- Objective 4: If sexually active, engage in safe sex practices by using condoms and by you and your partner getting an STD screening
